Our relationship with time … (as artists and professionals)

Due to the unprecedented nature of COVID-19, artists and professionals have experienced a universal and abrupt change to routine — globally. We all need to isolate and stay home. This has created a swath of challenges for artists and organizations who specialize in creating live audience experiences.

As a result, many of us feel like we have all of the time the world. So we binge on NETFLIX, or cook all sorts of complicated recipes, or read a book, or try yoga via ZOOM … anything to keep busy, alert and active. But this response often comes as a result of privilege. Some of us feel we don’t have the right kind of time, because we’re having a hard time staying afloat, or solvent, or healthy, or connected. No matter who we are, we have all had reactions related back to the time we are living through.

But before COVID-19, was our relationship with time all that different? It’s an open-ended question. So we ask ourselves: “what can we do now, to utilize the time that we have, to make the best of the situation we’ve inherited?”

To answer these questions, and much more, we turn to Ron Artis II, a celebrated musician and bandleader. In his song, Searching for Answers, he sings: “Searching for answers, every day I rise.” And as we get up each day, searching for answers, we are eager to get the perspective of an artist living through this COVID-19. We ask Ron Artis II how his relationship with time has colored his response to it.

We’re grateful that our interview with Ron Artis II continues to shed light on the current situation. But more than than our current circumstance, it sheds light on what we might chose to come. It’s about time … to talk about time.
